GUISADO DE GALINHA 2 / CHICKEN STEW 2

A estória de GUISADO DE GALINHA é acerca de duas famílias vizinhas que de repente se desentendem por um motivo frívolo, o que ocasiona uma situação inesperada e violenta. Os desenhos da Joana (aparentemente inocentes) raramente deixam antever toda a carga de violência e humor negro que normalmente povoam os seus filmes. Mas esse é também parte do seu fascínio.

CHICKEN STEW is about two nearby families that suddenly quarrel (for petty reasons) which causes an unexpected and violent situation. Joana’s drawings (which apparently have a childish look) rarely let foresee the whole load of violence and dark humor in Joana’s films. But that’s also the fascination about Joana’s animation.

Joana Toste (amiga, realizadora e produtora) convidou-me para animar alguns planos da sua curta metragem “GUISADO DE GALINHA”. A Joana tem uma pequena produtora GOMTCH-GOMTCH, e costuma convidar colegas para trabalhar nas suas produções. Fui um dos felizardos desta vez.


Joana Toste, (friend, director and producer) invited me for doing some animation for her animation short “CHICKEN STEW”. Joana owns a small production studio, GOMTCH-GOMTCH, and she usually invites colleagues for collaboration in her animation shorts. I was one of the lucky guys this time.

Duas crianças tentam derrubar uma maçã de uma árvore. Para isso usam duas varas de tamanhos diferentes.

This episode from THE ISLAND OF COLOURS tells us about different sizes: “SHORTER” and “LONGER” are the key words.
Two children try to reach an apple hanging from a tree. In order to do so they use two sticks with different sizes.
Guess which stick did the job…

This is a RTP ( Portuguese Public Channel) production, of small movies that will be part of a children show called THE ISLAND OF COLOURS. This show teaches children about good behaviour, interacting, education, by using games, jokes, small clips and a large dose of humour.
This episode tells us about similarities between children from different races.
I was the director of this episode as well as the author of the concept art, backgrounds and storyboards.

ESTÓRIAS PARIDAS / SPOOKY TELLERS

Mais uma ideia da Irina Calado que resultou numa proposta para 3 curtas. A particularidade desta série é que a Irina convidou 3 desenhadores para desenvolver o aspecto gráfico das 3 estórias. As estórias acontecem em realidades temporais diferentes, mas sempre no mesmo casarão secular, isolado. Tudo anda à volta de um velho retrato que parece viver e interagir com os habitantes.A estória que “ilustrei” passa-se a seguir à I Guerra Mundial. Um homem de meia-idade visita um antigo colega de armas, acompanhado pelo seu fiel criado. Entre este e a filha do dono da casa cresce uma relação que tem um desenrolar terrível.

This is another idea from Irina’s vivid imagination. The result was a 3 short-movies project.This time Irina invited 3 artists. Each artist developed the visual aspect for each short. The different stories take place in different periods of time, but always in a old and isolated manor. The series leitmotiv is a large painting hanging from the top of the stairs. It’s a portrait of a man standing, doing nothing. And yet, it seems to be alive and occasionally interacts with the residents.The story Irina offered me to develop takes place just after the I World War. A middle aged man visits an old army buddy, escorted by his devoted servant. Between the servant and the buddy’s daughter grows a love relationship that comes to an end in a very terrible way.

MULHER / WOMAN

Esta é uma ideia original da Irina Calado para uma série de 6 episódios de 6 minutos cada.
Trata-se de uma abordagem adulta e realista (temática e graficamente) de um assunto caro à Irina; o universo feminino, as suas dúvidas, medos e os afectos…
Acompanhamos cinco mulheres de diferentes condições sociais, nas suas frustrações, alegrias e desgostos e na diferentes maneiras de lidar com essas emoções.
Este projecto ganhou o “Apoio Financeiro ao Desenvolvimento de Séries de Animação” do ICAM.
Posteriormente ganhou o “Apoio Financeiro à Produção de Séries de Animação”.
Para além de autora e guionista, a Irina realizou esta série. Novamente, convidou-me para desenvolver a linha gráfica e também para ser responsável pelos lay-outs.

This is an original concept from Irina Calado for a 6 episodes series of 6 minutes each.
This is an adult and realistic approach of a very dear subject, as far as Irina is concern. The feminine universe; the doubts the fears the relationships…
This series show us five women with different social backgrounds, their problems, their needs, their grieves and the way they deal with all those feelings.
This concept won the Supporting Fund for Series Development sponsored by ICAM (Portuguese Film Institute).
Later, won also the Supporting Fund for Series Production also sponsored by ICAM.
Irina created, wrote and directed the series. Again, she invited me for developing the show general look. I was also the responsible for the lay-outs.

This series is now complete.

IN SILENTIUM

É a história de um casal de saltimbancos, que chega a uma terra. Ela é cega e lê o futuro numa bola de cristal. Ele “sente” as almas das pessoas e interpreta-as através da música do seu violino.
A escrita e realização ficou a cabo da Irina, assim como o desenvolvimento dos personagens.
Também aqui, os lay-outs ficaram a meu cargo.

It’s a story about two wanderers who have just arrived into a village. She’s blind but she can tell the future in her crystal ball. He “feels” other people souls and expresses them through music.
Irina wrote, developed the characters and directed this short herself. Once again, I did the lay-outs.

A CULPA / THE GUILT

Esta curta-metragem é novamente uma ideia original da Irina.
A história tem tanto de fascinante como de cruel. Uma adolescente caminha desde sempre por um mundo árido e deserto. Carrega a mãe às costas, como penitência, por ter sido convencida de que o seu nascimento foi a causa da destruição do mundo. Pelos menos foi isso que a mãe lhe contou…e relembra constantemente.
A Irina escreveu, desenvolveu os personagens e convidou-me para co-realizar em parceria com ela. Fui também o responsável pelos lay-outs.

This animation short is an original idea by Irina.
And the story is as fascinating as cruel. A teenage girl wanders
through an empty, barren, deserted landscape. She carries her mother on her back as penitence. The girl has been convinced that her birth brought death and total destruction to the entire world. At least that’s what her mother tells her…repeatedly.
Irina wrote the script, developed both characters and invited me to co-direct this short. I was, also, responsible for the lay-outs.
This short it's now finished.
